EFI Colloquium - Unveiling the Hidden: A Search for Light Dark Matter with DAMIC-M, Paolo Privitera, UChicago

The DAMIC-M (DArk Matter In CCDs at Modane) experiment employs silicon charged-coupled devices (CCDs) to search for sub-GeV dark matter particles with unprecedented sensitivity. Thanks to the sub-electron resolution and extremely low dark current of its skipper CCDs, DAMIC-M is particularly suited to probe dark matter candidates pertaining to the so-called "hidden sector." We will present the status of the experiment, in the advanced stage of construction at the Modane Underground Laboratory in France, and highlight recent results from a prototype detector, which exclude for the first time benchmark models for hidden-sector particles as a dominant component of dark matter.
