The effective field theory of perfect fluids.

Hydrodynamics is the universal description of the long-distance behavior of many body systems in terms of a few macroscopical variables. It is thus at its core an effective theory. It is no surprise that rephrasing it in the modern language of effective field theory (EFT) is particularly useful, enabling a more consistent treatment of classical and quantum corrections. In this talk, I will describe the surprisingly rich case of the perfect fluid, which can be realised by different subtely inequivalent EFTs. Due to the presence of transverse modes with vanishing dispersion relation at the classical level, the quantization shows unusual features. In particular, I will show how it implies the presence of UV-IR mixing and a very large degeneracy of the spectrum.
