Extremal black hole thermodynamics: the view from afar.
I will describe how near-extremal black holes behave as an ordinary quantum system with a vanishingly small degeneracy at low temperature. The essential point is the presence of nearly-gapless modes, which are supported in the near-horizon region, whose quantum dynamics has to be considered. I will review these ideas in the context of the near-extremal Kerr black hole. In addition, I will also indicate how the nearly-gapless modes extend away from the near-horizon region to the full black hole spacetime.
