Next generation storage ring light sources will dramatically increase the electron beam brightness, thereby increasing the X-ray brightness for science. The Advanced Photon Source at Argonne plans to replace the present ring with such an upgrade in 2024-2025, which will increase both the electron and X-ray beam brightness by nearly two orders of magnitude, thereby enabling a new class of experiments. Such intense electron beams have self-interactions which will affect the equilibrium, and can potentially drive instabilities. I will give an overview of these collective physics, and discuss our efforts to predict and mitigate any potentially deleterious effects for the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade project.
