Directors of the Institute
The Institute for Nuclear Studies was founded September, 1945, with Samuel King Allison as Director. Enrico Fermi was a professor at the Institute. Fermi died November 29, 1954 at the age of 53. On November 20, 1955 the Institute was renamed The Enrico Fermi Institute for Nuclear Studies. S. K. Allison served as director from 1945 to 1958, and again from 1963 to 1965. The Institute name was shortened to The Enrico Fermi Institute in January of 1968.
